4) Protesters at the University of Massachusetts spoke out against a proposed $1500 student fee increase for the upcoming fall semester.
The protest was held on the steps of Machmer Hall around noon on Wednesday, Feb. 25, two days before the Board of Trustees voted on the fee increase. Many of those students also participated in a national call-in day to Mass. Gov. Deval Patrick the day after the protest and then traveled to the Board of Trustee's meeting at UMass-Dartmouth asking board members to delay voting on the fee increase.
I took dozens of photos at Wednesday's demonstration which were compiled in a photo slideshow, wrote a story for the following day's paper and helped do interviews with Collegian multimedia editor S.P. Sullivan who had a video camera handy.
The video and photo slideshow were posted in the multimedia section of The Collegian's Web site. Just hours after the protest, Chancellor Robert Holub sent a campus-wide e-mail meant to clarify some confusion about the fee increases, though the e-mail was not directly related to the earlier protests according to a University spokesman. I covered that story as well.
